Saw Palmetto Extract

A liposterolic botanical extract that supports healthy prostate function, urinary flow, and male hormonal balance.

What it is

Saw Palmetto Extract is obtained from the ripe berries of Serenoa repens, a dwarf palm tree native to the southeastern United States. High-quality supplements utilize liposterolic supercritical CO2 extracts standardized to 85–95% fatty acids and phytosterols (primarily beta-sitosterol, oleic acid, and lauric acid). Saw palmetto inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), thereby supporting normal prostate size, lower urinary tract health, and hair follicle integrity in aging men.

Also known as: Serenoa repens, Sabal serrulata

What it does

  • Supports healthy prostate volume and lower urinary tract symptoms in aging men.
  • Inhibits 5-alpha-reductase to assist in maintaining balanced DHT levels.
  • Promotes nocturnal urinary comfort and steady urine flow rates.

Amplified by probiotics

The liposterolic fatty acids and phytosterols of saw palmetto require emulsification by conjugated bile acids for optimal intestinal micelle formation and enterocyte absorption. Probiotic bacteria regulate bile acid metabolism through bacterial bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity, maintaining an optimal ratio of free and conjugated bile acids. Furthermore, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria support the intestinal mucosal barrier, reducing systemic low-grade inflammation and pelvic endotoxemia, which in turn helps attenuate inflammatory signaling in prostate tissues and maximizes phytosterol bioaccessibility. This microencapsulated probiotic synergy ensures smooth absorption and enhanced cellular responsiveness in male urogenital tissues.

Typical dose

160–320 mg/day (standardized liposterolic extract 85–95% fatty acids)

The evidence

Evidence: moderate

Systematic reviews and clinical trials show that standardized liposterolic saw palmetto extract improves urinary symptom scores (IPSS) and peak urinary flow rates in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (Suter et al. 2013, Phytother Res). Clinical evaluations confirm comparable efficacy to pharmaceutical 5-ARIs for mild-to-moderate urinary support with superior tolerability (Kwon 2019, World J Mens Health).

Safety & who should check first

Mild gastrointestinal discomfort is rare. Does not significantly alter serum PSA levels at standard doses. Discontinue prior to elective surgery due to mild antiplatelet potential.
